Winter Trucking Survival Kit

Winter is right around the corner, and with it comes the snow, ice, strong winds and subzero temperatures. Truck drivers have to travel long distances and deliver cargo no matter what the weather is, so they should be prepared for anything. Here are some items every truck driver should have in case of emergency during the colder months. Most of these items are good to keep in your truck year round, but are especially useful during extreme weather.

Staying Warm

In the winter, it's important to stay warm, especially if your job requires you to be outside a lot. Having extra blankets, hats, coats, gloves, and boots in your truck is a good idea when outside temperatures are low. Wearing a big coat, gloves, thick socks, and thermal underwear will help you stay warm outside while loading and unloading cargo. Truck drivers should also have an alternative source of heat in case of emergency, like an auxiliary power unit that heats the cab of the truck without running the engine. Another alternative is a wick candle heater, but make sure you have a lighter or matches to light it.

In Case You Get Stuck

Since it's cold outside, there's a good chance there will be snow and ice on the ground depending on where you are. In the event that something goes wrong and you break down, get stuck, or need to help someone else out, it's good to have things handy. Some things you might need include a windshield scraper, recovery straps or tow chains, road flares, a snow shovel, traction mats, a bag of salt or sand, and jumper cables. You never know what could happen, and when you might need one of these items. It's also smart to keep extra food, water, and phone chargers with you in case you break down and can't move. Some other items every truck driver should keep in their truck include a first aid kit, flashlight and batteries, a knife, and a hand crank radio.

Other Ways To Prepare For Winter

Although having a winter trucking survival kit is important, making sure your truck is ready for the extreme weather should be your top priority. Things every truck driver should check before heading out this winter are things like tire pressure, coolant systems, and the truck's battery. Making sure your truck runs and everything works is the most important thing you can do to prevent any accidents. Winter weather is unpredictable, and something could still happen, but it's better to be prepared in case of an emergency. Truck drivers should always watch the weather to help them decide which route is the safest. Always add extra time if possible to your deliveries so that you are able to drive safe and slow.
